! READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY$ IF YOU ARE INTENDING TO ADVERTISE!
& Advertisements may be placed in the&magazine if they comply with the
following conditions...
& They must not contain any offensive&material. They must not contain any&"Legal Only" statements as this&implies that advertisements without&such statements may not be for legal&goods. Any suspect advertisements will¬ be included - this column is not"provided as a service for pirates.
& You must provide in writing your!full name, address and signature.& There is a maximum of four text&advertisements per issue from any one!source and all must be different.
& Advertisements must be provided on&disk in the ANSII text format. Place&them in a drawer called Adverts.&Please write the date and your full&name and address on the disk as well&as the word "Adverts". See below for&the format required. Written adverts
will not be accepted.
SUBSCRIBERS
& Advertising is free to subscribers.&You will receive your disk back with&the next issue of the magazine, if not&sooner. You may also place you adverts&in any or all future issues while you&are a subscriber. Please ask to have&them withdrawn if you have had enough
of a response.
NON-SUBSCRIBERS
& Non-subscribers may place adverts&in the following way. (Note that you&will receive written conformation that&the adverts have been received and in#which issue they have been placed.)
& Your advertisements will only go in&the one issue. If you wish to place&them in future issues you will have to
repeat the following.
From New Zealand...& Send your adverts on one disk plus&ONE other disk containing the latest&PUBLIC DOMAIN software you have. The&disks won't be returned - they are to&cover the cost of placing the adverts&and acknowledging they have been received.

have been received.
ADVERTISING FORMATS
& There are three text formats&available, Quarter Page, Vertical Half&Page and Horizontal Half Page. All&should be ASCII text files with a .q&.v or .h extension to the file to&represent the advert's format. The&following are the number of lines and&characters per line allowed for each&format. The characters per line&numbers don't include ANSI format
controls of which see below.
Quarter Page Adverts...
13 lines of 38 characters.
Half Page Horizontal Adverts...
13 lines of 78 characters.
Half Page Vertical Adverts...
28 lines of 38 characters.
ANSI FORMAT CONTROLS
&You don't have to use these codes
if you don't want to.
& The following ANSI format controls&are used by Magnetic Pages, the&program I use to put the magazine&together. I suggest you get the text&right first and add the control codes&afterwards if you are not using an&ANSI text editor. Note that "Esc"&(ASCII code 27) means the Escape key&in the top-left of the keyboard. This&may appear as a space or oblong square&or perhaps something else in your text&depending on the text editor or word
processor you use.
&Esc[0m - Resets the text to the"default colour and to plain style. Esc[3m -

& More than one code may be included&in a single command by separating them&with semicolons ";". A typical piece&of ANSI text would look something like
this.
$This is a Esc[32;3mtypicalEsc[31;23m
piece of ANSI text.
& This turns "typical" white and into&italics and it looks like this when
written...

& The overall background colour of&the advert (as apposed to the screen&colour which will always be grey) will&be taken from the background colour of&the first character on the first line.&If you are not going to have any text&there then make it a space. The&following piece of text sets the&background colour to white and the
text to black.
Esc[42;31m
& I suggest you use either a black or&white background if you have no way of&testing what the colours you have&chosen will look like on a television&screen. Some mixtures of colours are&unreadable on some TVs. If no codes&are included in the text file I will&select the colours - one for the&background and one for the text. If&you wish you can include 16 colour&hi-res non-interlaced pictures of what&your adverts should look like as a&guide for me - but not as a substitute&for the text adverts. To get the&correct palette just save one of the&advert pages from the magazine and&load it into your paint program and&clear the screen. Then, using topaz 8,&type up your advert in the colours you
want.
NOTES ON ADVERTISING
& Keep in mind that computer disks&are potentially immortal and therefore&your advert will be also. If you don't&want to still be receiving replies in&the 21st century I suggest you put a&Reply Before date in them. (What do&you mean people won't be reading this&in the 21st century? Of course they will be.)& What should you do if while&swapping software in good faith you&receive back from someone pirated&commercial software? I suggest you&format the disks, write a polite&letter telling the sender that if they&can't send legal stuff then don't&bother to write back, and return the&disks. (Format them so that if they&want to send the disks off again they&have to re-copy the contents back on&again.) Sending the disks back means&they can't accuse you of being a disk
thief.
